Traditional Braces.
As an orthodontist, braces are the primary tool used by Dr. Cash. Braces consist of bands on the back teeth and brackets on the remaining teeth. The brackets themselves may be stainless steel or ceramic. Each bracket has an elastic or "o ring" around it. Most patients like to choose the colors of their o rings which are changed at each appointment. Click here for more information on how long does treatment take?

In addition to braces, the Rapid Palatal Expander or RPE, is the appliance used most frequently Dr. Cash. The RPE is used in cases of crowding
or crossbite. It attaches to the upper side and back teeth and is "fixed" into place meaning it cannot be removed by the patient.
Generally, for the first two weeks after it is placed in the mouth, the patient or patient's parent will "activate" the appliance at home before bedtime. A small instrument is used to reach inside the mouth and "turn" a special mechanism on the expander. The pressure that is applied to the upper jaw creates additional space and ultimately widens the upper jaw.

The Herbst Appliance is used in place of the old-fashioned headgear.
Dr. Cash prescribes the Herbst in cases where the lower jaw is deficient compared to the upper jaw. The Herbst appliance forces the patient to hold the lower jaw into a forward position -- imagine sticking your chin and bottom teeth forward. By maintaining this position, the lower jaw actually grows forward. See more on how a child's age and growth can affect orthodontic treatment.
